Smecta is an anti-diarrheal medication suitable for adults and children, 2 years and above. It is indicated for:-

• Treatment of acute diarrhea in adults and children 2 years and above, in addition to oral rehydration.
• Symptomatic treatment of chronic functional diarrhea in adults.
• Symptomatic treatment of pain associated with functional bowel diseases in adults.

The active substance contained in Smecta is diosmectite (also known as dioctahedral smectite), which is a natural purified and standardised clay.

According to the leaflet structure of diosmectite, Smecta works by covering the mucous membrane of the digestive tract and provide protection by increasing mucous membrane resistance in response to aggresive agents.

Smecta is neither absorbed nor metabolized. At usual doses, it does not modify the physiological intestinal transit time.

• Children of 2 years and above
  The contents of the sachet can be added and thoroughly stirred in the feeding bottle with 50 ml of water, to be given at intervals during the day, or thoroughly mixed with a semi-liquid food: broth, stewed fruit, mashed vegetables, or baby food.
• Adults
  Contents of one sachet should be thoroughly stirred in half a glass of water before taking.

SmectaGO is a ready to drink preparation to be taken orally. The content of the sachet can be swallowed directly. Massage the sachet before opening it. Each sachet should only be used once after opening.

If the symptoms do not improve within 7 days, please seek professional medical advice.

It is recommended not to administer any other drugs at the same time as Smecta (more than 2 hours, if possible). The adsorbent properties of this product may interfere with the absorption times and/or rates of other substances.

Smecta is not recommended during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If you are pregnant, think you might be pregnant or are planning to become pregnant or are breastfeeding, you should see advice from your doctor or pharmacist before taking this medicine.
